<h2>Gun Violence Survivor</h2>In 1988, my family and our community’s faith and hope were tested, when a classroom of second graders was attacked by a deranged shooter culminating in my parents and I being held hostage at gunpoint. I managed to negotiate their safe release and survive a near fatal bullet to the chest. This incident in Winnetka, Illinois was the first of the nationally known school shootings that sadly have become recurring nightmares in communities all across this nation. I am forever grateful for the first responders, doctors, faith and civic community leaders, family members and support systems that saved my life that day. I have never wavered in my commitment to earn and return that gift each day.

In this work we never wavered in honoring our oath to defend the Constitution while protecting our national security at every level. I’ve served across the country, overseas and collaborated with public safety professionals and our nation's allies. I’ve trained and led others to do the right thing the right way - building trust and teamwork – designing and implementing strategies that always put people first.When de-escalating conflicts, saving lives and accomplishing the mission at the FBI, I always remembered the important support and empathy I received during my own recovery from violence. That compassion has taught me the foundation of resilience that I rely on even today. I have learned that most who suffer from violence, threat and tragedy have few or none of the support systems I benefited from to thrive. And, it is my mission to do all I can to make sure healthy systems, such as healthcare, wellbeing support, effective policing, education, small business financing and others are in place to help lift us all.I’ve lobbied beside Jim and Sarah Brady, Gabby Giffords, Everytown for Gun Safety and scores of survivors of gun violence. I’ve trained and supported first responders across the globe in crisis response. I’ve gone head-to-head with spies, terrorists and brought to justice child exploiters, corrupt public officials and scammers.Leading hostage negotiation teams, I’ve built strategies to support families in bringing loved ones home safely. I’ve worked and supported every level of our national security and public safety infrastructure and institutions. I understand the rule of law, trust, and the need for the opportunity for reform and efficiency in our government.These experiences have taught me how critical it is to have healthy institutions and systems that protect and support us, particularly when in crisis. They have shown me how important trust, relationships, listening, and compassion are in responding to crises and solving complex problems. My experiences also ingrained in me the idea that if you want to do hard things you need a healthy, united team with varied expertise who never, never, never give up.<h2>Roots in the District</h2>I grew up in this area as the middle child of seven in a family that exemplified the service of others as a moral obligation and fulfillment of a purposeful life. My parents both grew up in this district. They met on the Foster Ave Bus on the way to school. My mother was a kindergarten teacher beginning in the Bronx, New York and finishing at St. Norbert’s in Northbrook.My father was a self-made man of a single mother who managed to earn a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame and worked as a U.S Mailman to pay his way through law school.In my parents’ early life they organized buses for the 1963 March on Washington. My father leaned against the Washington Monument during Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s "I Have a Dream” speech. In the mid-1960’s they worked and rallied with migrant workers in California.My early years were defined by a large and chaotic family, athletics, and jobs as a lifeguard and swimming instructor. These experiences helped me see an even bigger family in our community. My experience at Loyola Academy fostered a sense of justice and commitment to social good. I had early opportunities to lead in high school and college as a three-time swimming team captain and school record holder at the University of Illinois.

I’ll also push for lifetime bans on lobbying and corporate board service for members of Congress, crack down on insider trading, and end Citizens United to stop billionaires from buying political influence.Concentrated wealth leads to concentrated power—and that’s a threat to democracy.

Every child deserves access to a high-quality public education, regardless of ZIP code or income. I’ll fight to revitalize the Department of Education, increase federal funding for underserved districts, and ensure equitable access to advanced coursework, arts education, and career pathways. We must also invest in teachers’ compensation and training to recruit and retain the most motivated and skilled educators.Mental health is foundational to learning and safety, so I’ll expand funding for counselors and integrate mental health education into curricula. I’ll also combat hate and extremism by strengthening civil rights protections, enforcing anti-bullying policies, pushing common sense policies and support for social media literacy education and cyberbullying prevention, and elevating civic education.

I’ve spent my career working to prevent violence, whether through law enforcement, community partnerships, or trauma-informed care. In Congress, I’ll fight for evidence-based strategies that address the root causes of harm: poverty, disinvestment, and lack of opportunity. That means investing in mental health services, greening vacant lots, and rehabilitating abandoned buildings, all of which are proven interventions that reduce violence and strengthen neighborhoods. I’ll support coordinated threat assessment programs, crisis response teams, and violence prevention initiatives that bring together law enforcement, public health, and community leaders.Safety is the presence of dignity, stability, and trust, not simply the absence of crime. Therefore, public safety must be proactive, not reactive.

I’ve spent my career preventing violence. Public safety means preventing harm before it happens. I’ll support coordinated crisis response, threat assessment, and proven community investments that reduce violence and strengthen neighborhoods.

Jan Schakowsky’s 9th Congressional District seat and a week after saying he would resume a campaign schedule, entrepreneur Bruce Leon has formally withdrawn and endorsed a rival candidate.Leon, a Democratic ward committeeperson in Chicago, is backing Phil Andrew, a Wilmette resident and former FBI agent.Leon <a href="https://archive.is/o/dVV7p/https://www.elections.il.gov/ElectionOperations/CandidateList.aspx?ElectionID=Z2J/vYpKX8w%3D&amp;CanLastName=rg36JblE73SSkTKDva9CRg%3D%3D&amp;Status=P2wRQXkiFoo%3D&amp;QueryType=xF443FTCAJbIL3atac/UjEg7Y4yklgT1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">filed paperwork to withdraw</a> Tuesday with the Illinois State Board of Elections. His departure from the contest leaves 16 candidates for the Democratic nomination in the 9th, a historically liberal district that includes parts of Cook, Lake and McHenry counties. Four Republicans are running, too.Schakowsky, an Evanston Democrat, isn’t seeking reelection to the seat she’s held since 1999.In a news release, Leon said Andrew’s professional experience and personal experience as a survivor of gun violence make him an ideal lawmaker. Andrew was among the people shot by mass-murderer Laurie Dann in 1988, when he was a college student.“Phil is about public service, not self-service,” Leon said. “We don’t need lifetime politicians fighting for us at a time when our institutions are under attack.”In the same release, Andrew expressed gratitude for Leon’s endorsement.Leon initially suspended his campaign in late December at what he said was the urging of supporters and friends who “lost their nerve.” Leon, who is Jewish, said he’d been pressured by the <a href="https://archive.is/o/dVV7p/https://www.aipac.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">American Israel Public Affairs Committee</a>, an influential and well-funded lobbying group, to quit.A day after the Jan. 7 deadline for candidates to withdraw their names from March 17 primary ballots, Leon told the Daily Herald he’d be resuming campaign activities because 9th District residents deserve a moderate lawmaker “who will stand up unapologetically against antisemitism … and who will defend the U.S.-Israel alliance without fear or hesitation.”AIPAC has supported state Sen. Laura Fine of Glenview, who also is Jewish, for the 9th District seat but hasn’t formally endorsed her. It’s also criticized 9th District Democratic hopefuls Daniel Biss, who is Jewish, and Kat Abughazaleh, who is Palestinian American.The 9th District has a relatively large Jewish population. With over a dozen candidates in attendance and a packed room of engaged voters, the evening offered a vital opportunity to share our values and priorities just five months ahead of the primary.I spoke about my commitment to building peace through trust, vision, and long-term engagement—especially in response to the complex and heartbreaking conflict in Israel and Palestine. I emphasized that real peace takes more than soundbites; it takes leadership willing to do the hard work of diplomacy and reconciliation. On healthcare, I joined many of my fellow candidates in supporting universal access and comprehensive reform.
